The Fall of Jericho. Now Jericho was shut up inside and outside because of the people of Israel. None went out, and none came in. And the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and mighty men of valor. You shall march around the city, all the men of war going around the city once. Thus shall you do for six days. Seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark. On the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets. And when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, when you hear the sound of the trumpet, then all the people shall shout with a great shout, and the wall of the city will fall down flat, and the people shall go up, everyone straight before him.” So Joshua the son of Nun called the priests and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the Lord.” And he said to the people, “Go forward. March around the city and let the armed men pass on before the ark of the Lord.” (Joshua 6: 1 to 7) There could be many ways to conquer a fortified city. However, for a stronghold such as Jericho with those stone defensive walls and monumental towers that was shut up inside and outside, the only way was to climb over, punctuate, or dig under those walls. Yet, out of anybody's imagination and common sense, God told Joshua to tell the people of Israel to march around the city once a day with the seven priests blowing the rams' horns before the ark of the covenant in the middle of the marching army. On the seventh day, they would march around the city for seven times then shout with a great shout after hearing a long blast of the ram's horn. So, the people of Israel did just that and the city wall fell down flat as described below. So the people shouted, and the trumpets were blown. As soon as the people heard the sound of the trumpet, the people shouted a great shout, and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they captured the city. Then they devoted all in the city to destruction, both men and women, young and old, oxen, sheep, and donkeys, with the edge of the sword. (Joshua 6: 20 21) Many scientists and scholars tried to figure out about the Jericho phenomenon. They knew it must be true because it was so outrageous that only God could have come up with this kind of plan and done it. If it's true then the only explanation would be the earthquake. Only an earthquake could flat the strong stone walls like that. It's nothing new or difficult for God to cause an earthquake. If so, then why bother for the Israelites to march around Jericho? Ever since the exodus, the Israelites were complaining and disobedient. They were against Moses numerous times. It took them 40 years wandering in the Sinai desert for the old rebellion generation to demolish. Now, the new generation were all born in the desert free of the obsession and anxiety of the flesh but to keep the commandments of the Lord their God by walking in His ways and by fearing Him. So, the marching was to show their obedience just like they were in the desert. Then why such strange marching patterns? It was to give the people of Jericho the grace to repent. They knew that God had given their city to the Israelites. So, God gave them the grace to repent not once but six times. On the seventh day, seven times. However, even though their hearts melted because of the fear, nobody repented but Rehab. That's why the whole city was annihilated but Rehab and her family. Then why the final great shout? That's the explosion of their faith at last. When they were marching, Joshua commanded them to absolute silence as described below. But Joshua commanded the people, “You shall not shout or make your voice heard, neither shall any word go out of your mouth, until the day I tell you to shout. Then you shall shout.” (Joshua 6: 10) It's to let Israelites know that the battle of Jericho belonged to God not the strategy planning or any wisdom of the men. Just like the apostle Paul described below. Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?” “Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?” For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen. (Romans 11: 33 to 36) As for us who are saved by grace, we know that God's might and glory is manifested in Jesus Christ as described below. Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory. (First Timothy 3: 16) So, if we could receive Jesus Christ as our savior then we could be assured of the same faith as Israelites. Immanuel.
